Calator in Thailanda 12. Wat Phrasingh sau Manastirea Leului / Traveller in Thailand 12. Wat Phrasingh or the Monastery of the Lion

Wat Phra Singh or the Temple of the Lion was constructed in 1345 by the King Pa Yo, in order to enshrine here the ashes of the King Kam Fu, the 6th ruler of Chang Mai. It is one of the finnest example of Lanna style and the most photographed temple in Chang Mai.

To me, this temple was one of extraordinary beauty, even if I visited here after the “pearl of the crown”, wihich is Wat Doi Suthep!

The main viharn is a new one, constructed in 1929, but the interior is overwhelming. Red and gold are the main colors and the numerous flower offers are very impressive. The King's portrait, like in every wat, is well adorned. Among many Buddha's images, a monk is meditating. He is similar with the statues!

Passing by the white bell shaped chedi, we went to the old viharn Lai Kham, where the real treasure of the temple, the Phra Singh Buddha, attracts a lot of visitors. The statue was brought from Sri Lanka, in 1367. In thai language "phra" means "priest" but it is also used for the Buddha's images, and "singh" means "lion". This viharn is made of tek wood and the facade is adorned with gold on ochre color. The walls are covered with wonderful paintings, representing the day to day life of the people but also scened of legends.

In the ubosot we saw an interesting shrine, in the middle of the room. A lot of Buddha's images and the nice decorations are eye's catching.

The wat's grounds are full of beautiful flowers. We sat a little on a bench admiring the surroundings. Among the ordinary tourists, some monks also wandered around, making photos.

The last structure we have seen (only outside because it is locked) was the ho tray, the library. This one is considered the most beautiful in Chiang Mai. Dewas (spirits) figures ornate the wall and the superior part is made of wood. In the silence surrounding this corner of the wat, a monk was painting. We passed silently, not to disturb him. This view completed in an amazing way our visit here.

Intregul complex a fost renovat in 2005/2006.

O pereche de singha albi strajuiesc intrarea in complex, conform uzantelor in templele thailandeze.
El a fost construit in 1929.

In interior, observam alte elemente Lanna, precum stalpii rosii, lacuiti, cu modele aurii.

Interiorul ne arata un altar neobisnuit, in forma de turn si asezat in mijlocul incaperii.

Aceasta scena incheie in mod fericit intreaga noastra vizita.

I got lost: an impressive set of photos, but really too many for a single post!

O intrebare, daca stii. Calugarul este un el sau o ea? Mie mi se pare ca e o femeie, nu stiu de ce.

Traveling Hawk said...

You might be right, VP! But there have been so many details I found there and all interesting, so that it was difficult to select them better. I promise to try harder in my next posts. Think that I have over 200 photos from this temple! But thanks for the appreciation:)

Wow, I am speechless at how impressive a site this is. Most of us know so little about places such as this. Which is why it is wonderful to have you take us on such a terrific visual tour TH! There are so many good shots, but perhaps the last is my favorite, the monk sketching :^) Well, I guess I was not speechless after all!

Thank you so much, Magda! I am glad you enjoyed this post.

Buna,
Iti cer parerea/ajutorul intr-o problema horticola :)
In luna mai fac o excursie in Olanda-Belgia.
In cele 4 zile de Olanda obligatoriu vizitam Keukenhof.
Recent am vazut ca in 2012 este si Floriade.

http://travelinghawk.blogspot.com/2010/06/keukenhof.html
Daca esti interesat, mai am si alte postari despre gradini, parcuri - trebuie sa le cauti la eticheta respectiva (Chelsea Flower Show, Butchart Gardens, Gradina Botanica din Beijing, etc.)
