Thassos revizitat 6. Sate de munte: Kallirachi / Thassos Revisited 6. Mountain Villages: Kallirachi

If in the summer one would prefer to stay on the shores of the island, attracted by the sea and sand, in the spring the mountain villages are very tempting. They have been founded on the mountain slopes, to be protected against the Aegean Sea pirates. People living there cultivated olive trees, lemmon trees, vegetables and had animals, being autonomous for their living. The architecture of the churches on the Mt. Athos, which is very near, influenced the villages.

In time, civil war, poverty, recession, determined people to emigrate, leaving behind only the youngest and oldest. When tourism arrived on Thassos, the youth made use of their properties on the shores to develop new businesses. Meantime, in the villages, the foreigners interested to discover the past, bought houses and started to renovate them. This engouraged the young people to do the same. Now they live again in the mountain villages, during the winter

Kallirachi, named at the beginning Kakirachi (kaki=bad, rachi=ridge), was constructed on the cliffs. But the pirates discovered and destroyed it. So it was reconstructed lower and renamed Kallirachi, kali=good. It has now 1300 inhabitants and it is near the coast (2.5 km). The narrow, windy streets could be discovered by feet. There are many new houses, some are renovated, and very few of the old ones still stay.

The St. Anargyri Church was opened, which is very rare, so I took some photos inside. In the middle of the village, at the traditional taverna, the old men dring coffee, tea or ouzo, looking at the people. A white marble statue reminds those from the village who gave their life for the country, during 1919-1949. Here is also the bus station.

Vicisitudinile istoriei (saracia, razboiul civil) au determinat emigrarea multor locuitori, satele fiind aproape in totalitate parasite.

Initial, el a fost construit, in sec.
